I remember a time during my college days, when I was traveling with friends and my husband. We had decided to venture off the beaten path in Cabo, and found ourselves in a local restaurant that had been recommended to us. 🍽️
As we were enjoying our meal, a woman, clearly inebriated, began to dance around our table. She was disruptive, but we tried to ignore her. That was until she reached over, grabbed a chip from our basket, and proceeded to hurl racial slurs at us. 🥡
My husband, ever the smart-ass, responded with, "I'm not from China." This only seemed to infuriate her more, and before we knew it, she had punched him in the face. 🥊
It was a shocking experience, to say the least. I had never before witnessed such blatant hatred directed at someone simply because of their appearance. It was my first real-life encounter with racism, and it left a deep impression on me.
It was a stark reminder of the importance of breaking stereotypes and fostering understanding. It's a story I share in my book "Cancel the Filter," not to dwell on the negative, but to highlight the need for change.
