LeRon Barton, in a recent talk, touched on a topic that's been on many minds lately - grit. 🤔
He questioned whether we should be teaching children of color about grit.
The idea of grit, of pulling oneself up by the bootstraps, is a concept deeply ingrained in American culture. 🇺🇸
It's a romantic notion, the idea of someone rising from the bottom to the top through sheer determination and hard work.
But as LeRon pointed out, this isn't always the reality. 🚫
He shared a term he learned from his friend Karen F. Fleshman in 2013 - Social Capital. It's the idea that most jobs and wealth in America are held and passed down generationally.
So, while grit is important, it's not the only factor in success. Let's continue the conversation and work towards a more equitable society. 🙌
