In a recent conversation with Sheena Yap Chan, we dove deep into the complexities of Asian identity and the harmful stereotypes that often accompany it. 🎎
Sheena shared that, within the Asian community, there's often a pressure to conform to certain expectations - to be hardworking, to be quiet, to not ask for help. These expectations, she says, can be damaging to mental health and self-perception. 🏮
But it's not just about the internal struggles. Sheena also touched on the external misconceptions that the world often has about Asians. She noted that Asia is a diverse continent, made up of 50 different countries, each with its own unique languages and traditions. Yet, the world often sees Asians as a monolith, assuming everyone is from China. 🗺️
This generalization, she says, is not just incorrect but also harmful. It's this kind of thinking that led to the rise of anti-Asian hate during the pandemic, as people unfairly blamed all Asians for the virus, even mistaking Latin individuals for Asians.
Sheena's words serve as a powerful reminder that it's time to break these stereotypes and recognize the rich diversity within the Asian community. It's time to understand that we're not all one race, but a vibrant tapestry of cultures, languages, and traditions.
Let's continue to educate ourselves and others, and strive for a world where everyone's individuality is celebrated.
